What is V3 plant based fitness?

The V3 Plant Based Fitness system is a bodybuilding program developed by Chris Willitts. Mr. Willitts is also the owner and brain child of a company called  Vegetarian Bodybuilding. This site is for vegetarians, vegans, or anyone who has the desire to eat more plants and less meat.  The purpose of V3 Plant Based Fitness  is to  help individuals to eat more plants and fewer animal products. This includes vegetarians, vegans, or anyone who has the desire to increase plant intake.

About  Chris Willitts, founder of  V3 Plant Based Fitness

Chris Willitts is a 20+  year veteran bodybuilder. He contributes to the development of the sport by writing for the following notable health and fitness publications:

Mr. Willitts is a graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He majored in business, psychology, and consciousness studies.  He also is an alumnus of the prestigious LeaderShape Institute,  an outstanding organization for leaders.

The LeaderShape Institute was also attended by Larry Page, Google co-founder. In tribute to his outstanding leadership, Chris Willitts was appointed as  facilitator of the LeaderShape Institute program.

 

The beliefs  underpinning  V3 Plant Based Fitness

Mr. Willitts believes that bodybuilders should eat a plant based diet. Plant based diets help bodybuilders to build gorgeous physiques and foster vibrant health.  He opines that “traditional bodybuilding involves sacrificing your health to look good and get ahead.”

Mr. Willitts advocates the plant based  diet because of the volume of scientific research in its favor.  The truth is, eating plants creates harmony and fitness within the body.

His  V3 (vegetarian) Bodybuilding system also  focuses  strength, flexibility, functionality, and mind-body fitness.

 

What is the plant based diet?

plantbased diet is comprised predominantly or completely of plants.  This includes grains, nuts, seeds, vegetables, legumes and fruits. The individual may consume few or no animal products (wikipedia.com, 2019).

 

Is a plant based diet the same as vegan?

These definitions may help to explain the sometimes confusing differences between plant based, vegan and other similar terms (wikipedia.com, 2019)

  • Veganism: consists of vegetables, legumes, fruit, grains, nuts, and seeds, but no food from animal sources.
    • Fruitarianism:  consists mainly of fruit.
    • Raw veganism: vegan diet in which food is uncooked and sometimes dehydrated.
  • Vegetarianism: diet of vegetables, legumes, fruit, nuts, and grains.  Eggs and dairy may be eaten, but meat is excluded entirely.
    • Ovo-lacto vegetarianism: includes dairy and eggs.
    • Ovo vegetarianism: includes eggs but no dairy.
    • Lacto vegetarianism: includes dairy but no eggs.
  • Semi-vegetarianism: mostly vegetarian diet.  Meat and/or poultry are eaten at times.
    • Macrobiotic diet: semi-vegetarian diet.  Whole grains, vegetables, beans, miso soup, sea vegetables, and traditionally or naturally processed foods are mainly eaten. Seaood and other animal products may or may not be eaten.
    • Pescatarian: semi-vegetarian diet with eggs, dairy and seafood.
    • Flexitarian: semi-vegetarian diet. Daily intake of meat is reduced. The individual may be  vegetarian on specific days of the week.

What are the benefits of a plant based diet?

The plant diet was eaten by humans since the dawn of time. Historical records show, however,  that human life span drastically reduced in half when animals were eaten in the diet.

Other civilizations, including the Jews, ate a predominantly plant based diet. This included grains like wheat, barley and corn. Their diet also included olives, grapes, herbs, garlic, cucumbers, melons,  leeks, onions and green plants.

Meat products included fish and various types of clean animals.

Ancient Jews lived to over 100 years in many instances. In today’s world, grains often lie at the cause of gluten intolerance disorders. Why is this the case? Is it because of the additives that are used in sowing, growth, harvesting and processing? I hope that science can find the answer to that question.

Roman Gladiators ate a mostly vegetarian diet and drank a tonic of ashes after training

Scientists from the MedUni in Vienna, in cooperation with the University of Berndoing, made some startling discoveries. While doing excavations in the ancient city of Ephesus (modern day Turkey), they discovered the bones of ancient warriors in a gladiator cemetery (Science Daily, 2014).

This cemetery dated back to  2nd or 3rd century BC.  Ancient Ephesos was the capital of the Roman province of Asia at the time. It housed 200,000 inhabitants.

The scientists used a diagnostic test called spectroscopy to investigate the state of  carbon, nitrogen and sulphur in the collagen (a protein) of the gladiators’ bones.  They also tested the ratio of strontium to calcium in the bone mineral.

The result shows that gladiators mostly ate a vegetarian diet.  Their meals comprised mainly of  grain and meat-free meals, in keeping with the rest of the Ephesians.

However, the gladiators’  bones revealed a higher percentage of strontium in comparison to the rest of the population. This led researchers to conclude that they had a higher intake of minerals from a strontium-rich source of calcium.

The researchers concluded that the literature claiming that gladiators drank an ash tonic is accurate. This ash tonic was imbibed in order to heal their bones.

This ash tonic would be similar to modern day Activated Charcoal, which is used for  various purposes including cleansing the body from toxins. It is so effective that it is used in medicine as an emergency treatment for ingestion of poisons.

Plants contain compounds that protect humans from disease

A field of science called nutritional genomics reveals that plant based diets help humans to ward off disease. This comes in the face of horrifying 2008 statistics from the World Health Organization that show that 63% of deaths for that year were due to non-communicable chronic diseases.

This group of diseases include conditions such as cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, Type 2 diabetes and obesity. It is well known that these are due in part to poor dietary intake. Statistics also show that persons living in societies that eat healthy, plant-based diets rarely fall victim to these ailments.

Breakthroughs in the field of nutritional genomics show that plants contain compounds which control genetic and other biological factors that lead to chronic disease. One of these are the antioxidants in plant foods. Antioxidants protect humans from damaging substances called free radicals. In turn, free radicals can cause chronic inflammation and damage cells.

Plants also contain other compounds which control a gene linked to cardiovascular disease and plaque buildup in arteries. These compounds also control genes and other cellular components responsible for forming and sustaining tumors.

All consumers should treat their diets as if food is the medicine necessary to maintain healthy, disease-free lives, according to William W. Li, M.D., President and Medical Director of the Angiogenesis Foundation in Cambridge, Mass (Science Daily, 2012).

Eating more plant-based foods may be linked to better heart health

A 2019 release from the American Heart Association recommended a diet high in plants to protect the heart from disease:

Eating mostly plant-based foods and fewer animal-based foods may be linked to better heart health and a lower risk of dying from a heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular disease (American Heart Association, cited in Science Daily, 2019).

Researchers reviewed a food intake database of more than 10,000 middle-aged U.S. adults  who were followed up between 1987 t0 2o16. These adults did no have cardiovascular disease at the start of the study.  Researchers grouped eating patterns by the proportion of plant-based foods they ate versus animal-based foods.

People who ate the most plant-based foods overall had a:

  • 16% lower risk of having a cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks, stroke, heart failure and other conditions;
  • 32% lower risk of dying from a cardiovascular disease and
  • 25% lower risk of dying from any cause when compared to those who ate the least amount of plant-based foods (Science Daily, 2019).

As a result, the American Heart Association (2019) now recommends eating a diet with a larger volume of plants.

What foods can you eat on a plant based diet?

The American Heart Association (2019) advises that foods in a plant-based diet  should be:

  • rich in nutrition
  • low in added sugars
  • low in sodium (salt)
  • low in cholesterol (ie bad cholesterol)
  • low in saturated fats (clog arteries)
  • and low in trans fats which clog arteries.

The best plant foods are and are unprocessed. They have not been changed in any way. These would included fresh fruits, plants and vegetables that come from areas like the Farmers Market.

Poor plant food sources would include french fries or cauliflower pizza with cheese. While they are plant based, they are low in nutritional value since they are high in sodium (salt) (American Heart Association, cited in Science Daily, 2019).

How do you start a plant based diet?

Having gone through the process, I must let you know that it is very challenging to go from eating meats to predominantly plants.  I went back and forth until I became unglued from animal products.

Chris Willitts recommends the following for anyone trying to go plant based:

  • Use vegetarian-friendly magazines, websites, and cookbooks as a source of information.
  • Make easy modifications to your favorite recipes, replacing meat with beans and vegetables.
  • Make fresh green drinks  focusing on dark green leafy vegetables. Over time your palate/taste will change, and you will crave these kinds of foods.
  • Use plant-based protein powders to supplement protein needs.  
  • Vary the preparation method – make stir-fries and scrambles; make combos of vegetables to increase interest.Meal combos can comprise of:
    • veggies like broccoli, carrots, bell peppers, spinach, etc.
    • protein  like quinoa, tofu, tempeh, seitans.
    • spices like turmeric, coconut oil, black pepper, sea salt.
  • Seek out vegetarian restaurants and try new vegetarian-based ethnic foods.
  • Regularly search for new recipes to maintain interest. 
  • Eat healthy plant based fats such as avocados, nuts and seeds, and coconut oil.

What do you eat for breakfast on a plant based diet?

Try this tasty mushroom and black bean vegetarian recipe for breakfast

Ingredients

  • 1 15 oz. can of black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 8 oz. of shiitake mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 1 organic farm fresh egg
  • 1/2 cup of gluten free Italian bread crumbs
  • 1 cloves of garlic – minced
  • 1 tsp. of ground sea salt
  • Ground black pepper to taste

Directions

  • Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Place black beans, mushrooms, egg, bread crumbs, garlic, salt, pepper and seasonings into large bowl. Mix* thoroughly.
  • Coat muffin tin with coconut oil.
  • Roll mixture into balls and place in muffin tin.
  • Bake for approximately 12-15 minutes. Be careful not to let them dry out.
  • Remove from oven and serve with marinara sauce.

*The interior texture can get mushy if the mushrooms or black beans contain too much liquid. Be sure to drain all ingredients thoroughly before mixing.
